Profile of Manufacturing Services Department.
Manufacturing is the process of coordinating workers, machines, tools and materials to create a product. The primary purpose of manufacturing is to produce quality products from raw Materials. The manufacturing services department is divided into three sections and two units namely production services, quality control, Assembly and finishing Sections. Under the production services, we have mechanical and Electrical production units.

PRODUCTION SERVICES SECTION
Production is a process of combining various material inputs (raw materials, semi-finished goods, subassemblies) and immaterial inputs (plans, know-how) in order to make something for consumption (output). It is act of creating output, a good or service which has value and contribute to the utility of individual. It is imperative to note that, it is also the duty of the section to call for the servicing and maintenance of any machine in the workshop if the need arise.
Production processes include casting, forging, bending, rolling, press work, injection molding, dies, electrical discharge machining, electrochemical machining, blow molding and variation of other hot and cold processes.
Production steps include:
Material selection and manufacturing method
Assembly requirement
Production control
Planning and tooling requirement
Production and manufacturing of the product
Inspection and quality control
DUTIES OF MECHANICAL PRODUCTION UNIT.
Fabricate, fit and install fabricated parts to form finish products using hand and power tools.
Position, align and adjust parts for proper fit and assemble, connect cables, tubes and wires.
Fasten parts together using bolting and riveting equipment or other fastening or joining techniques.
Check and inspect finished products for proper quality control.
Operate small cranes in the workshop and position larger parts as required
DUTIES OF THE ELECTRICAL PRODUCTION UNIT
Wind coils and armatures for small electrical motors and transformer
Fabricate circuit breakers, switches or other electrical control equipment.
Set up assembly line with materials and supplies required for production and adjust production tools
Perform minor repairs on production machines
Fabricate step up and step down transformers, electrical motors and other electrical products.
QUALITY CONTROL SECTION.
Quality control (QC) is a procedure or set of procedures intended to ensure that a manufactured product or performed service adheres to a defined set of quality criteria or meets the requirements of the client or customer.
This is a unit under Manufacturing Services department, it carries out those activities which assures that quality creation in the institutes is perform in such a manner that the resulting product will in fact perform its intended function. Simply, it is responsible for most of the activities carried to attain the quality target.
However, the role of quality control unit is not merely concerned with checking the conformance of the product with laid specification but involves decision making also as to whether the production should be allowed to continue further, once a faulty product is detected or stopped to take corrective measures for future production.
DUTIES OF QUALITY CONTROL SECTION
The following are the roles of the unit which, if performed in a systematic manner, leads to achieving the objectives of the unit,
Helping in the assessment and location of proper material supplies and sub-contractors for the production unit.
Reviewing the specification laid in the purchase orders and sub-contracts to ensure that the required quality standards are incorporated in them.
Checking the incoming material to ensure that it is in conformity with the specification laid in the purchase order.
Helping in proper assessment of the requirement of customers so as to set proper quality targets for the products.
Identifying the likely quality problems by comparing the design documents with the design standards.
Setting inspection point, prescribing inspection methods and providing instructions for these.
Checking and approving the machinery, processes, testing procedures and testing equipment used in the manufacturing of products.
Inspecting and testing the product at chosen key points during the course of manufacturing.
Initiating and following up to ensure that required corrective actions are taken up in time and future products and services are of the required quality level.
Collecting the field data regarding the performance, life, failure etc, of the products after sale, analyzing the same to evaluate the level of customer’s satisfaction and initiating the corrective measures.
Develop and implement technical standards.
Administer and ensure that the standards are kept.
Confirmation of quality of project or services by obtaining issue a confirmatory note.
Control and verification of certain characteristic of a product or services through examination, testing etc. to ascertain if it meets organization standard.
ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING SECTION.
This is one of the sections in the manufacturing services department of the institute. It provides complete packaging services to meet customers’ needs.
This involves several processes and techniques including ultrasonic welding, heat staking, silkscreen printing and product assembly. EMI/RFI shielding can be achieved through conductive coatings or as an alternative compounded plastic materials. We also have access to hard coating and vacuum metallization facilities. Parts from the micro molder can be packed in clean room conditions.
DUTIES OF THE ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING SECTION
Assembly and finishing unit take all parts of a product and put them together.
The unit conducts finishing on a product which includes trimming, adhesive bonding, painting, and packaging, kitting as well as supply chain management.
The assembly and finishing unit services include mechanical, Electrical or pneumatic component Assembly function test and batch certification.
The unit also conducts a test on finished product, i.e. electrical or mechanical.
